The American Geophysical Union will spend nearly $42 million to renovate its Washington, D.C., headquarters so the building generates as much electricity as it consumes.
AGU announced Monday the group would seek to create D.C.'s first "net zero" commercial building. Renovations on the 62,000-square-foot structure are scheduled to begin in March 2017, with the building reopening sometime before the organization's fall meeting in December 2018.
"AGU strives to be an innovative leader and partner that advances and communicates science's power to ensure a sustainable future—which must include re-envisioning our workplaces as livable, interconnected environments that are energy efficient, minimize our carbon footprint in the public space, and provide a healthy and dynamic ecosystem for our members and staff," AGU CEO Chris McEntee said.
AGU, which represents Earth and space scientists, wants the renovated structure to showcase sustainable architectural design and engineering. Among the features to be added are a rooftop photovoltaic array; a heat exchange system to recover thermal energy from wastewater running below the street; a direct current electrified grid with LED lighting; a radiant cooling system that circulates chilled water through pipes; and enhanced insulation.
The group's headquarters is located at 2000 Florida Ave. NW, near DuPont Circle. The renovated building will also include a public area highlighting impacts and innovations in Earth and space science. http://bit.ly/2hgx4UR
